WWRP Polar Prediction Project - Year of Polar Prediction
I invite you to take a look at http://polarprediction.wordpress.com/
It provides details about the WWRP Polar Prediction Project which includes the idea for a Year of Polar Prediction (YOPP) in 2017-2018 (tentative). A draft implementation plan is available.
From the site:
"The aim of the WWRP Polar Prediction Project (WWRP-PPP) is to “Promote cooperative international research enabling
development of improved weather and environmental prediction services
for the polar regions, on time scales from hourly to seasonal.” This
project constitutes the hourly to seasonal research component of the
emerging WMO Global Integrated Polar Prediction System (GIPPS). A
closely related WCRP Polar Climate Predictability Initiative covers
GIPPS research on seasonal to decadal time scales."
"One of the proposed key elements of the Polar Prediction Project is The
Year of Polar Prediction, or YOPP, which will consider both the Arctic
and Antarctic, and is tentatively scheduled to take place in 2017-2018.
The intention is to have an extended period of coordinated intensive
observational and modelling activities in order to improve polar
prediction capabilities on a wide range of time scales. This will be
augmented by research into forecast-stakeholder interaction,
verification and a strong educational component. It is quite different
from the IPY in 2007-2008, being focussed on polar prediction rather
than a very broad range of activities."
It would be interesting to explore coordination between this initiative and potential future French activities.

Re:WWRP Polar Prediction Project - Year of Polar Prediction.
Yes, I agree with you, we definitely need to coordinate a response at french level in view of this WWRP Polar Prediction Project.
By this time, for instance, the full multivariate and multi data analysis scheme operated actually in real time by Mercator Océan in his "eddy resolving" global operational short term forecasting system will be deployed at high latitudes, i.e. from the Antarctica coastline to the North Pole.
